Keeping healthy during Ramadan
How you can make sure you stay healthy during Ramadan:
- Always maintain a balanced diet and drink adequate fluid between fasts
- If
your health is at risk because of serious illness, old age or
pregnancy, speak to your doctor to check if it is safe for you to fast.
Allah has given permission in the Quran to break the fast on medical
advice.
- Keep
all medical appointments in Ramadan, or reschedule for immediately
after if you feel you really can't attend. If you are undergoing tests
or investigations for cancer, it is particularly important you keep your
appointment during Ramadan
- If
you take medication such as tablets or insulin to control your
diabetes, please speak to your GP before Ramadan starts to find out if
it is safe to fast. It can be extremely dangerous to alter times of
medication or to take drugs that require food on an empty stomach
- If
fasting is not recommended by your GP or hospital team, the Islamic
ruling is that you should not fast during Ramadan and should instead
make a charitable donation (fidyah)
- If
you have high blood pressure or asthma, you will probably have been
prescribed medication to control your illness. It is important that
these medications are taken regularly, every day.
